Conferring of Awards


The RACDS currently has four categories of Awards these are:

1.         Honorary Members and Fellows

2.         Election without Examination

3.         Meritorious Service Award

4.         Presidential Commendation

Applications for all nominations in each of the four categories close on 30 September in each year. All nominations must be made by completing the Nomination Form and sending to the Nominations Committee through the CEO’s office at ceo@racds.org


1. Honorary Fellows and Members

The award of Honorary Fellowship is considered as the highest award to be bestowed on a nominee.


The College’s Constitution outlines the conferring of Honorary Fellowship and Membership as follows:


44. (a) The Council may confer Honorary
Fellowship on distinguished persons who in the opinion of the Council have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of  the College or to the science and practice of dentistry. Fellows elected under this Rule shall be entitled to use the appropriate description as defined in the bylaws.


44. (b) The Council may confer Honorary
Membership on distinguished persons who in the opinion of the Council have made a notable contribution to the advancement of  the College or to the science and practice of dentistry. Members elected under this Rule shall be entitled to use the appropriate description as defined in the bylaws.

2. Election without examination

The College Constitution states that in any one year there is a limit of awarding two Fellowships or Memberships without examination in General Dental Practice and two Fellowships or Memberships without examination in all Specialist Dental Practice disciplines. The Constitution outlines the conferring of Fellowship or Membership without examination thus:


43. (a) The Council may, in its absolute discretion, elect to
Fellowship without examination, dentists who in the opinion of the Council have made outstanding  contributions to dentistry. Not more than two (2) such dentists in General Dental Practice (as defined in the Regulations) and not more than two (2) such dentists in total for all Specialist  Dental Practice disciplines (as defined in the Regulations) may be elected in any one (1) year. Nominations under this Rule shall be made on the prescribed form, signed by two (2) members of Council. Fellows elected under this Rule shall be entitled to use the appropriate description as defined in the bylaws.


(b) The Council may, in its absolute discretion, elect to
Membership without examination, dentists who in the opinion of the Council have made notable contribution to dentistry. Not more than two (2) such dentists in General  Dental Practice (as defined in the Regulations) and not more than two (2) such dentists in total for all Specialist Dental Practice disciplines (as defined in the Regulations) may be elected in any  one (1) year. Nominations under this Rule shall be made on the prescribed form, signed by two

(2) members of Council. Members elected under this Rule shall be entitled to use the appropriate description as defined in the bylaws.

A medically or other qualified practitioner may be admitted as a MRACDS(SDP) or FRACDS(SDP) member ad eundem* provided that the Council is satisfied that any diploma that s/he has received from another institution, or their standard of training, is equivalent to that required for Membership or Fellowship by examination of The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

In cases of MRACDS(SDP) or FRACDS(SDP) by application, the award conferred by the Council will use the terminology “Membership ad eundem”.

The RACDS has a category of membership entitled "Membership/Fellowship ad eundem" (Webster online dictionary definition ad eundem - to, in, or of the same rank - used especially of the honorary granting of academic standing or a degree by a university to one whose actual work was done elsewhere).


3. Meritorious Service Award

The Meritorious Service Award can be conferred as follows:

·          The name of any person who has rendered long and distinguished service to the College or to dentistry may be submitted to Council for consideration for the Meritorious Service Award.

·          The recipient of the Meritorious Service Award shall have no special rights to Fellowship  or Membership of the College nor receive any benefits or privileges there from.

·          Nominations for this Award shall be made in writing to Nominations for this award shall be made in writing to the Nominations Committee.

·          The award shall be made by Council after discussion in committee by a resolution passed by two-thirds of the members present and voting.

·          The form of the Award and its presentation shall be determined by Council.
