Accreditation of Training Program

This prestigious four-year program, recognised by Medical and Dental Councils in Australia and New Zealand, ensures standardised specialist training across Australia and New Zealand through regional training centres. Trainees develop their surgical expertise under supervision, progressing towards independent practice. Upon successful completion of the training program requirements and the Fellowship Examination, candidates can apply for Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – FRACDS(OMS), a recognised qualification for specialist registration.

The College is also committed to advancing the health of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Māori communities by fostering a diverse, competent and inclusive OMS workforce.

Selection & Eligibility

Eligibility

To apply for selection into the OMS Training Program, applicants must have completed the following pre-requisites:

  1. Citizenship or permanent resident status of Australia or New Zealand
  2. Dental degree with full and unconditional registration to practice dentistry in either Australia or New Zealand
  3. Medical degree with full and unconditional registration to practice medicine in either Australia or New Zealand
  4. Twelve (12) Months of PGY2+ rotations related to surgery or acute care which may include general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology head and neck surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology surgery, oral maxillofacial surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, anaesthesia, emergency or intensive care. (Applicants who have undertaken nine (9) months related to the acute care or surgical disciplines outlined above will be considered if they have completed 12 months of PGY 2+ rotations).
  5. The maximum duration of an OMS rotation during the PGY 2+ year must not exceed 6 months.

Selection

The selection process is predetermined, transparent, and objective. It includes a range of approaches to ensure validity and reliability, involves multiple raters, contains criteria for marking and allocates weighting for each tool to permit ranking of the applicants. The tools include a structured Curriculum Vitae assessment (20%), Professional Performance Appraisal (PPA) referee reports (35%), and Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMIs) (45%).

Selection Initiatives

The OMS Selection Committee has implemented selection initiatives to increase representation of Māori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and Pacific Peoples applicants, and to strengthen representation in the rural surgical workforce. Refer to the OMS Selection Handbook for guidance.

Application Timeline for Selection into the OMS Training Program 2027

31 March – 30 April 2026 Stage 1: Application period for eligibility for selection
Applicants submit completed application form (FOMS01), structured CV and certified supporting documents by 5:00 pm (AEST) on Thursday, 30 April.
May 2026 Applicants are assessed for eligibility and CVs are scored. All applicants will be notified of the outcome.
June 2026 Stage 2: Collection of referee reports
Professional Performance Appraisals (PPAs) are distributed to referees, collated and scored.
25 July 2026 (Sydney) Stage 3: Multiple Mini Interviews
Successful applicants are notified two weeks in advance to attend the face-to-face MMI interviews.
Week commencing 27 July  Stage 4: Announcement of offers
Directors of Training notify applicants if they have been offered a training position.

Hospitals applying for an Accredited OMS Training Post

Hospitals seeking accreditation for the OMS Training Program must submit a formal application demonstrating compliance with training standards. This process ensures that all training posts provide an optimal learning environment that supports the development of competent and highly skilled Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

To initiate the accreditation process, hospitals must complete the Standards and Criteria for Accreditation of Regional Training Centres – Hospitals Pre-Visit Survey Application Form. This application assesses the hospital’s facilities, clinical case load, supervision structure, and training resources to ensure alignment with RACDS training requirements.
