The Fellowship Examination in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is the final examination in the OMS Training Program, ensuring that trainees have acquired the advanced clinical, surgical, and decision-making skills required for independent specialist practice. Trainees who have completed their required training time, or are within the final 18 months of training, may apply to sit the Fellowship Examination.
Before registering for the examination, eligible trainees must complete the Application for Fellowship Examination Eligibility Form (FOMS05) on the Digital Assessment Platform, together with all required supporting documentation, and pay the eligibility fee; this application must be approved by the Director of Training and subsequently by the Training Committee.
Candidates may only register for the examination once they have received an email from the OMS Education team confirming that the Training Committee has approved their eligibility application. If you have not received this confirmation, please do not register for the examination.
Format of the Fellowship Examination
- Written Examinations – Short answer questions (two exams of three hours each). Evidence-based medicine will be examined, and appropriate citations of historical and contemporary research will be required.
- Clinical Examinations – Six medium cases (17 minutes each). Consist of a mix of clinical cases that an OMS surgeon might encounter, assessing a candidate’s clinical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
- Anatomy Viva – One Viva (15 minutes). Viva will consist of any combination of photos, diagrams or specimens for the assessment of anatomical knowledge. Any area of the body with relevance to OMS may be examined.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Vivas – Three OMS Vivas (20 minutes each). Involves PowerPoint images of clinical material. Identical images are used for each candidate with standardised questions. Surgical Pathology will be incorporated as a component of the OMS Vivas with photographic presentations of histopathology specimens and case scenarios.
OMS 4 trainees must successfully complete the Fellowship Examination before applying for the award of Fellowship. For further information, please refer to the Accredited Training in OMS Handbook.

How to Register
To register, click the “Sign in to Register” button located in the right-hand panel and log in using your RACDS credentials. If you are already logged in, click the “Register Now” button. Please ensure you complete the registration process in full. Candidates will receive further examination details after enrolments have closed.

Important Notes:
- Candidates are required to upload a profile photo before completing their registration. The photo must have a plain white or light-coloured background, be clear and in focus, and be less than 5 MB.
- The College does not specify a formal English language requirement. However, all assessments are conducted and marked in English, and candidates are expected to demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.5 in all bands or a grade B in the OET.
- The written examination will be conducted remotely using computer-based examination software. All examinations are recorded in accordance with the RACDS Recording of Examinations Policy, and candidates must consent to recording as part of the enrolment process.
- Registration fees may be refunded in accordance with the RACDS Refund Policy.
- Registration is valid only for the examination sitting to which the candidate has been admitted.
- The College reserves the right to amend examination dates and times where necessary. If an examination is cancelled or postponed, the examination enrolment fee will be refunded in full. The College accepts no responsibility for any additional costs incurred by candidates.

- Payment can be made in either Australian Dollars (AUD) or New Zealand Dollars (NZD). Please pay in the currency applicable to your location – in NZD if you are based in New Zealand, and in AUD for all other locations.
- Registered candidates are required to read the Fellowship Examination candidate guides, and are responsible for meeting and testing the Examplify requirements provided in the Examplify Guide before the examinations.
