Overview:
There will be a review of the best means to take a “pain history” and the processes involved in identifying the correct diagnosis as well as considered the differential diagnoses.  There will also be a review of the therapeutic approaches, in particular the medications used for the management of varying types of complex oro-facial pain encountered in clinical practice.  The session will finish with a review of the best approaches to managing acute dental related pain and post-operative pain in the era of rising concerns about the appropriate use of narcotic analgesics in dental practice.

  • Pain biology
  • Improved understanding of the complexity of pain arising from the stomatognathic system
  • An approach to the diagnosis and consideration of the differential diagnosis of pain arising from the stomatognathic system
  • Therapeutic approaches to managing complex oro-facial pain
  • Review of the “opioid crisis” and the implications for the safe and appropriate prescribing of  analgesic agents in dental practice

  • A/Prof Mark Schifter

    Mark Schifter is a A/Professor in Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney. He obtained his specialist qualifications in Oral Medicine, also from the University of Sydney in 1998. Mark has been in specialist oral medicine practice for over 25 years, having inaugurated the speciality in the state of NSW. He also holds Memberships (by examination) in Special Needs Dentistry and Oral Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellowships in Oral Medicine (by examination) from the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FFD RCSI (Oral Med)) and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS (Oral Med)). He is the current Convenor/Coordinator of the specialist-training program in Oral Medicine of the Sydney Dental School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, the University of Sydney.
