Emeritus Professor John McGeachie
John graduated in Dentistry UWA, 1963 and spent 8 years teaching & specialising in Prosthodontics at the Dental School. During the last 40 years John has trained many research scholars who completed Honours, Masters, and PhD degrees, and many developed successful international research and teaching careers of their own. In 1992 John was awarded a Doctorate of Science from UWA for his outstanding contributions to research. John has been teaching anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, cell biology and histology to under- and post-graduates for the last 45 years and developed innovative programs for dissecting human cadavers from the medial aspect; an approach ideally suited to dental students. In 1990, John was appointed Head of Anatomy & Human Biology, and in 2000, appointed Head of Dentistry and Director of the new ($38 million) Oral Health Centre of WA, which opened in January 2002. In 2006 John was awarded an Order of Australia for his contributions to research & teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He retired formally at the end of 2009, but continued working voluntarily full-time: lecturing, mentoring, and supervising research students, and enjoying the academic and intellectual environment at UWA. Currently, John is co-supervisor to some 20 PhD candidates, mostly by editing research manuscripts and especially PhD thesis drafts, completing about 5 theses each year.
